CPDP is a non profit platform originally founded in 2007 by research groups from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Université de Namur and Tilburg University. From the start CPDP wanted to be more than just an academic platform. The mission is to gather all relevant stakeholders in an atmosphere of independence and mutual respect. The platform was joined by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique and the Fraunhofer Institut für System und Innovationsforschung. Today, under the CPDP umbrella, panels are organised by a multitude of institutes and research groups: the Zentrum Technik und Gesellschaft der TU Berlin, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Fundamental Rights Agency, and others. Sponsor money is used to organize the platform, to support some speakers and PhD students and to set up the Multidisciplinary Privacy Paper Award.
